Team “John Yourse Runs For City Council” will be wearing bib number 283. John will run the last leg on Saturday and looks forward to visiting with runners and residents after he crosses the finish line.

Following Saturday’s signature start to his campaign race, John plans to continue his campaign by walking across all neighborhoods throughout the entire District 9 to meet residents personally. To mark the end of his campaign race, John and his supporters will walk or run the Rock ‘N’ Roll 5-mile race at Winfrey Point on May 2.

My family and I have made the decision to take on the challenge of running a true grass roots effort for Dallas City Council District 9.

My desire to serve in this capacity has not surprised anyone who knows me. Serving as your council representative offers the opportunity to carry my zeal for public service to the greater Dallas community. I believe this is the right choice and the right time.

I’m a native of Buffalo NY, but having married a Texan and raising two Dallas born children, I feel it’s in my interest to do all I can to preserve and improve what’s great about this community.

I won’t list the schools I’ve attended or the many places I’ve traveled in service to our country over the last 20 years, nor will I outline here the trials and challenges of teaching in the Dallas public high schools; it should suffice to say that this new way to give back makes perfect sense for me and I’m capable and qualified for the task.

I believe this city has to promote secure, clean, safe, beautiful living space for the teachers, police officers, firefighters, military families and plain old Middle Americans we exalt as integral to our (American) way of life. Many of the people of this district have growing concerns about tax valuation and assessments as well as safety and schools. For us the true value of our homes lies in the people who live nearby walking their dogs, pushing strollers and looking out for each other. As far as safety and better schools is concerned, I can’t say that I will fix these issues, but I have some solid ideas and the experience to know what’s probable in the short term and what possible long term. The keys to making the change that we want are parental, community and government cooperation, but everything starts with people power.

I want the opportunity to help lead this community and city as your representative, power and voice. This is the essence of our social system and what gives citizens the power to create the city we want and makes choices in our collective best interest.

I have lived in this community since 2001 with my wife, Traci, and our two young daughters and am active in several civic and community organizations, including the Dallas Public Library, Dallas Services Board of Directors, the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul, Community Board for KERA, Hillside Community Board of Directors, as well as being a current member of the Texas Air National Guard.

For the past 23 years I’ve served our country on five continents as an Army and Air Force officer and in the Dallas community in some of the most challenging schools and public service programs. I ask for your support in this new service opportunity and the chance to be your representative in the effort to make Dallas and the 9th District the premier place to live.

We hope we can count on your support by:

• Letting us know of opportunities to talk to small groups, civic organizations, church groups and neighborhood associations
• Helping us knock on a few doors (we only have 15 weeks until election day)
• Telling your friends and neighbors to spread the word that this race offers a real choice and invite them to ask questions
• And any small donation would be appreciated

This is a tough challenge but one we can accomplish together.

This is what it’s all about – stepping up to the plate and offering oneself for the greater good.
